In December 2013, a large oil spill off the coast of La Brea in Trinidad caused a massive kill of marine life and birds. I grew up eating fish, including carite, that was caught in these waters but I stopped after the spill as I wasn’t sure about the health of the fish anymore. In this piece, I imagine a changing carite – its shape changed from long and linear to round, its tail falling off and its future as a ‘super-predator’ that will eat people, trees, houses and birds.

A T-shirt was also printed with this linoblock and is also shown, as well as the first-cut of the linoblock. The organic cotton, unisex medium T-shirt costs US$54 (TT$360) and the first-cut print on acid-free paper costs US$100 (TT$700). NOTE: This print is currently out of stock. However, the first-cut print and the Hand-printed and painted T-shirt are still available.

These pieces are offered as part of #artistsupportpledge which is a generous culture and dynamic economy in support of artists and makers.

The concept is a simple one. Artists and makers post images of their work to sell for NO MORE than TT$1400 (US$200, £200, €200, ¥20000) each (not including shipping.) Anyone can then buy the work. Every time the artist or maker reaches TT$7000 (US$1000) of sales they pledge to buy another artist’s work for TT$1400 (US$200). This is open to artists all over the world and is to encourage a more democratic, equal and open economy for all artists and makers.

This is a brilliant artistic illustration of the devastating impact of an oil spill on marine life and the risk of evolving weird new life forms. I grew up in Trinidad, like the artist, and it reminds me of delicious fried carite, avocado and bread and more importantly the risk of sea pollution.
