‘Freedom no. 18 – True Freedom/Iguana’. Kavir Mootoo, 2021. Acrylic on 15”x30”. (Framed)
I got a palette knife and whenever I get a new tool for art, it’s the most exciting thing. It’s said that when learning something new, to learn the rules first and then they can be broken or so that they can be broken. I understand this but I like to jump into it, to let the tool (and the moment) speak to me – not letting a video or an article influence what will happen. With this piece, in which I’m continuing working with greens, different tools came out (wedges, brushes and my fingers). It felt great to play, to experiment and let the tools and the paint and the canvas and my intuition lead the way.
